Gerald G. Grommet

Gerald G. "Jerry" Grommet, of Kirkwood, Missouri, passed away January 23, 2026 at the age of 87. He was born December 03, 1938 in St. Louis, to Lillian (nee Greenwald) and George Grommet, who have preceded him in death. Loving husband of the late Gayle Grommet (nee Kramer); devoted father of Tracy (Alex) Perkins, the late Leslie Simpers, and the late Lane Jamboretz; cherished grandfather of Claire (Seth) Stecker, Allison (Andrew) Engel, Phillip Perkins, Natalie (P.J.) Perkins, Dylan (Erin) Jamboretz, Sara (Casey) Jamboretz, Nathan (Jade) Jamboretz, and the late Rachel Simpers; great grandfather of Abe Engel and Logan Jamboretz; dearest brother of Richard "Dick" (Carole) Grommet; dear father-in-law of Thomas Jamboretz; and longtime companion of Susan Carlson. Jerry was a man of quiet strength, sharp wit, and deep devotion to the people he loved. A husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he lived his life with steadiness, intelligence, and a dry sense of humor that kept everyone on their toes. Jerry found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved settling in to watch television—especially goofy British spy shows—and could often be found with a good mystery or spy novel close at hand. An avid reader, he enjoyed stories from many authors and genres, particularly those full of intrigue. He was always up for a good cigar and a fine glass of scotch, best enjoyed while relaxing after a well-kept day. Travel was one of Jerry’s great passions. He especially loved cruises and warm destinations, faithfully escaping winter every February for adventures to Hawaii, the South Pacific, or the Caribbean. Summers were spent with family at the Lake of the Ozarks, where swimming, sunshine, and time together made lasting memories—especially at his brother’s pool. Jerry treasured time with his family above all else. He adored his grandchildren and cherished every visit with them. A creature of habit in the best way, he spoke with his daughter every day at the same time, like clockwork. Sundays were reserved for family dinners, welcoming his son-in-law and grandsons into his home each week. A devoted husband, Jerry shared a remarkable love story with his wife, Gayle. High school sweethearts, they met in eighth grade, attended church together, were confirmed together, and later married at Concordia Lutheran Church in Kirkwood. Both graduates of Kirkwood High, they built a life together that spanned nearly 50 years—a testament to loyalty, partnership, and enduring love. After the passing of his beloved wife, Jerry was fortunate to find love again with Susan. She renewed a spirit in him, and their relationship brought him comfort, companionship, and joy, reminding all who knew him that love and connection can be found even after a great loss. Professionally, Jerry was the prototype engineer: highly intelligent, precise, and practical, with a black-and-white way of thinking that served him well. He owned and operated St. Louis County Surveying & Engineering, earning respect for his work ethic and expertise. True to form, he often wore flannel shirts complete with pocket protectors. As many said fondly, they broke the mold when they made Jerry. Jerry was a man of few words, but when he spoke, it mattered. He had a very dry, sarcastic sense of humor and a talent for perfectly timed one-liners—quick, clever, and sometimes devastating if you weren’t careful enough to stay out of the line of fire. Though he enjoyed being around people, he was never one to command the room; his presence spoke for itself. He never complained, even in the face of health challenges. When asked how he was doing, the answer was always “fine.” Good-tempered, steady, and kind, Jerry carried himself with quiet grace and resilience. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, a proud grandfather, and a wonderful father-in-law. His legacy lives on in the routines he kept, the humor he shared, the love he gave, and the countless lives he touched simply by being exactly who he was. Jerry will be deeply missed and fondly remembered—by his family, his friends, and all who had the good fortune to know him.
