Ella Marie Waterhouse

Waterhouse, Ella Marie (nee Melvin) of the Dogtown neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, was born January 28, 1947 in St. Louis, Missouri to Johnnie and Geraldine (nee Lewis) Melvin and entered into rest Thursday, September 26, 2024 in Webster Groves, Missouri at the age of 77 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Geraldine (nee Lewis) Melvin and her husband, former St. Louis Alderman William (Bill) Waterhouse. She is survived by her children, John (Lisa) Waterhouse and Laurie Waterhouse (Tony Mueller); three (3) grandchildren, Michael “Mike” Waterhouse, Allison “Allie” Waterhouse, and Ryan Waterhouse; and great-grandchild, Grace Olivia Waterhouse; along with numerous other extended family and friends. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a beloved woman, cherished by her family and community. Ella, better known as Marie, was a loving wife, a devoted mother, and a doting grandmother and great-grandmother who found her greatest joy in spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A proud resident of the Dogtown neighborhood in St. Louis, Marie believed in giving back to her community and took immense pride in her city, serving for many years as the St. Louis Democratic Committeewoman in the 24th Ward and supporting her husband during his tenure on the St. Louis Board of Alderman. For over 30 years, Marie worked at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch as the personal assistant to the esteemed owner and founder, Joseph Pulitzer III. Her dedication and loyalty were hallmarks of her career, and she made lasting contributions to the publication during her time there. After Marie’s retirement, she found a love for leisure and fun, and could be found frequenting the St. Louis casinos to play the slot machines and was always up for meeting friends for a good margarita or a last-minute invitation to Seamus McDaniel’s in Dogtown. Marie’s Irish roots remained a central part of her identity, and she never lost her passion for celebrating her heritage. A true fighter, she battled cancer with immense strength and courage, surviving multiple rounds before ultimately losing her final fight. Marie will be remembered for her warmth, spirit, and the love she shared with all who knew her. Her legacy lives on through her family, friends, and the vibrant community she worked so hard to support. She will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. A Memorial Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at CHAPEL HILL MORTUARY, 10301 Big Bend Road, Kirkwood, Missouri 63122. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.at Chapel Hill Mortuary in Kirkwood, Missouri.
