Newton, Marcella (nee Drayton), of Kirkwood, Missouri, was born February 26, 1931 in Moselle, Missouri to Richard and Mary “Mae” (nee Rusan) Drayton and entered into rest Thursday, November 4, 2021 in Kirkwood, Missouri at the age of 90 years, 8 months and 9 days. She is preceded in death by, her parents, and her loving husband Hershell John Newton Jr., ten (10) siblings, She is survived by, two (2) children, Stephen W. Newton, Stephanie M. Newton, and Colin H. Newton, two (2) grandchildren, Brandon Newton and Stephanie Newton, one (1) great grandchild, Jada Love, along with numerous extended family and friends. Marcella graduated from Douglas High School. Many close friends and family had nicknames for her: Molly, Marcie, Marshmallow, Mrs. Noodles, Newt Newt, “Mother Theresa,” Auntie, Cella, and Moma Newton. She was married to the late Hershell John Newton for over 45 years. They had their two sons, daughter, granddaughter, grandson, and a great granddaughter. Marcella sacrificed to ensure her children received an education. She was a licensed cosmetologist so she could be home and available for her children. She was the first black female to work at Kirkwood Woolworth. She was a mother to all, whether she knew you or not. Her favorite song was “This Little Light Of Mine.” Purple was her favorite color. Her motto “If I can help somebody, as I pass along if I can cheer somebody, with a word or a song, if I can show somebody, how they’re traveling wrong, then my living shall not be in vain.” In 1940 at the age of 9 she was baptized at Unity Baptist Church. She came to Harrison Ave Baptist Church under Pastor Clarence Wells. She loved Harrison Ave Baptist Church and all her pastors past and present. She donated flowers for the sanctuary, could always be found cleaning the church, she was the president of the usher board, she was a lifetime member for the Mission of the Burean District Association, she sang in the choir and was a trustee. Her favorite script was Psalms 27-1 “The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is my stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” She LOVED the Lord and doing his work. She will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Visitation Saturday, November 13, 2021 from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the Service at 1:00 p.m. at CHAPEL HILL MORTUARY, 10301 Big Bend Rd. Kirkwood, Missouri, Graveside will be private.
